3510 and Striping Multiple Tray's

Is it possible to stripe vertically across disk trays? We have many 3510's with 6 - 8 fully populated disk tray's attached. If I could create many RAID 5 LUN's for example across multiple tray's allowing you to lose a tray and not effect the LUN?

Disconnect one of the trays in the middle and see what happens to the trays below it. ;)

It is most definitely possible to stripe vertically across the 3510's. I know someone who has done this in a effort to get outstanding performance and it is outstanding while it works.

If you are using Veratis for the RAID 5 and Quick I/O forget about it. Quick I/O is totally unforgiving if you have a controller failure as the split second it takes to failover will create havoc and lots of grief.Veratis gets really upset and errors any of the volumes that are being used. If your 3510 has 3.27 R or 4.13 I, you could be in serious trouble. Sometimes (more often every time), the lun gets errored out and thats it.

Sun know about this bug and are desperately hoping 4.15 or is 4.25 will fix this problem. I blame it on Dothill myself and not Sun.

I have seen this happen three times.

I would not do this configuration if your data is mission critical. As a matter of fact I would not do it at all on the 3510's. 3510's have so many serious bugs in the firmware, they should never be used. Every new release fixes hundreds of bugs but then it develops another hundred.

Cheers
