extend D1000 RAID 5

We have a D1000 in split array with 6 - 36 GB SCSI on a side. Would like to replace these with 6 - 146 GB Seagates (Sun derived) to increase the storage capacity. This is a RAID 5 array with slice 4 flagged 'wm' and cylinders at 0-24616. If I partition the new drive(s) in an identical fashion, but with cylinders = 0 to approx. 100000 can I replace the drives one at a time and resync - or is that too easy? Would it be better to just reconfigure the D1000 with the new drives and restore the filesystem from tape?

TIA

You answered your own question there, for ease and reliability I would go for the backup, reconfig and then restore.
