The firmware should not have an impact on whether the device is "seen".
However it is difficult to provide any precise answer,
because you've mentioned a model of a bare tape drive.
(no case, no power supply, no interface board, no cabling)
What did you take it from?
Quantum's link above shows the DLT7000 to be a S/E SCSI device.
So...Since this is a user-to-user forum, I'll say:
<i>Sure, Microsoft's plug-and-pray will find it.</i>
Then you can decide on whatever backup software suite you'll need to actually make it work.
EMC's Retrospect (formerly Dantz Retrospect) comes to mind.
