A1000 without Raid Manager

I have several A1000s that aren't doing anything that I'd like to re-use. I won't be using them with Solaris and won't have access to RM6.

I can get to the boxes via the serial port. Is there reference material anywhere, supported or not, for configuration through the serial port?

Is it possible to upgrade the A1000 boot firmware and app firmware via the serial interface?

Judging from the boot messages, it looks like the A1000s are running vxWorks. Is there reference documentation for the vxWorks build anywhere?

Can the ethernet port be configured and the boxes be placed on the network? The boot messages complain about not being able to contact a BOOTP server, which looks like the ethernet controller is functional, but perhaps disabled?

Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

looks like a big negatory, good buddy... a quick google for A1000 and linux or *BSD or Debian show no joy...looks like you will need to convert those A1000s into D1000s.haroldkarl

I'm pretty certain that I can figure out what I need from the firmware blobs. I think that using the and configuring the arrays from the serial interface is doable -- I was just hoping that somebody else had already done all the hard work of documenting the command interface. It does appear to be vxWorks based. If I'm going to have to do this the hard way, pointers to any good overview of vxWorks used with embedded array controllers would be appreciated as well.

Hello Chris,

there have been a few threads on the Sunmanagers mail list about firmware update through the console port.

Can you share the pinout of the used serial cable ?

Some of the commands are available in the Sun StorEdge A1000 and A3x00/A3500FC Best Practices Guide

Thanks for the pointers. I hadn't seen the Sun Managers posts.

The pinout for the db9 port is standard. I'm using a DB9 to RJ45 converter, connected to a Cisco 2511. You need to send a break to the array to get an initial response. It will ask you to press escape for a shell, or to send break again to set the baud rate. I connected with 9600 8N1.

stromsoe -- did you ever successfully configure your A1000 via the serial port?I seem to be in a similar situation.I currently have limited access to Sparc-based equipment, so it would be very nice to be able to configure my A1000 unit -- once it arrives via UPS.

ajokela,

Very old forum thread.Very old.

Multiple Sun forums were merged together, effective 30-Mar-06.

Some but not all of the last threads in the old forums were retained,

and all were given a 30-Mar-06 posting date regardless of original posting.

(which could be anywhere in 2005 or even earlier, there is no way to know for sure)

Note the font that's used for stromsoe's username.

It is not clickable, therefore they never re-registered for these forums.

It is very likely they've never visited the forums, ever again, since their initial inquiry and response.

You can only hope someone new has something to contribute.

Hello,

stromsoe didn't re-register, that means he won't get notified.

Even if you can access the A1000 via the serial port, some of these systems are password protected. His A1000 allowed access without a management password, mine was unfortunately "locked". Maybe all A1000 require a password.

In the past there was a RaidManger for Windows NT and DOS. This version was available on request from Sun .

Each RaidManager release works only with a certain A1000 firmware release. The updated firmware is/was available with the RaidManager updates.

I would suggest that you get a low cost SPARC (e.g. Ultra 5) and use the RaidManager to configure the A1000.

Please keep in mind that the A1000 uses HVD SCSI, single-ended or LVD/SE doesn't work.

I was thinking that I would end up having to pick up a cheap-o-system.So far, my attempts to console into the bad-boy have failed. sending breaks are doing nothing. I'm guess wrong baud rate. probably won't spend too much time monkeying with consoling into it. -alex-
