DDYS-T18350 disk parameters
I have a Ultra 2E Solaris 9 and only 9 GB of disk. I bought an IBM/Hitachi Ultrastar 18 GB disk modle DDYS-T18350 off of ebay and put it in.
Boot -r sees the disk, however I cannot format/partition it because there is no entry in /etc/format.dat
I have not been able to find on IBM or Hitachi's sight the specs (tracks, sectors, [I did find the # of heads] so I am stuck.
Please grep DDYS /etc/format.dat & if an entry post it. If there are any other options I would appreciate it.
I did try to newfs the whole disk without success,
Thanks
Andy

did you try opening up a terminal box and typing format? try it and see if the drive shows up... maybe it needs a volume label...
if you have to do sectors and tracks, then the drive doesn't work... since you did a boot -r, it should recognise the drive...
try this...

why did you start a new thread... this the same problem as in <a href="http://supportforum.sun.com/hardware/index.php?t=msg&goto=21573 38;amp;rid=364&SQ=5b090e07cd7606b76a2fc9db0dab951a" target="_blank"> http://supportforum.sun.com/hardware/index.php?t=msg&got o=21573&rid=364&SQ=5b090e07cd7606b76a2fc9db0dab951a</a>
if this the same drive, there is a chance that it is dead... you did take the jumpers off, right?

yes, jumpers are gone. I thought this the more appropraite forum, so I started one here. I did see a post on this forum with a similar issue, so I thought I would try. The dis was running on a A 60 (?) before but may have dies in transit.Andy

try page 8... there some jumpers to check...
did you try putting this drive in another computer? like a peecee... since Sun doesn't like it, maybe a peecee would? just to check to see if it functions...

if the drive went directly from a U60 to the U2 and now doesn't work... bad news.... other than new partitions, it should be fine... if all you did was put the scsi jumper(s) on, then off... that shouldn't have done anything...
sometimes they just die...
sorry, that is all I have,
good luck,

OK, new disk on the way. What are the steps to get it working ? used to be boot -r, run format to partition, newfs and mountshould I be doing those or other steps ? I read about devfsadm, drvlinks, etc.Andy
