adding big hard drives - 200 gb ide - to ultra 5

trying to add a 200 gb ide disk - Maxtor 6L200P0 -

into a ultra 5 is this possible ? and if yes, how to do it ?

-

at console promptprobe-ide shows us the disk as Maxtor 6L200P0.

after booting Sol 9 from CDformat shows only 800 MB or 36 GB (with jumper cylinder limitation)

running format (within format), we get the error message:

"cannot format this drive . Please use Manufacturer supplied formatting utility."

what to do?

we suppossed to use at least 136 GB from this disk. IDE should support this. perhaps more too?

Hello Klaus-Peter,

what to do?

this is a very, very popular question.

Short answers:

No, you can't low-level format an IDE disk with format. The manufacturers (Maxtor) program running on a PC is required, but there is no need to low-level format.

You are aware of the 28-bit LBA limitation. To get the highest usable capacity, the geometry of the drive must be manually defined.

Follow the instructions by supporte (Alexandre) in the following thread
