I still don't understand why people ask about formatting hard drives... when you install a version of Solaris, you repartition the hard drive(s) at that time... if you really need to format the drive(s), use the format command (open a window while in the installation disk)...
Am I wrong? what could possibly be left over when you install over an existing system?
formatting takes toooo bloody long to be a trivial pursuit.
Bill? Martin? someone? this has driven me crazy reading this type of question...
zeroing a drive for security is one thing, but if you are just going to install a newer version....

Gary,
my problem is that I have installed Solaris 8/9/10 for at least 5 years (hobbyist -type adventurist) and have only "formatted" a Sun hard drive a couple times.... a very painfull experience...
cool that you found your answer... I hope I didn't actually call you stupid... didn't mean to.... at least you weren't working on an ultra 5... LOL...
keep those questions coming.... there should be one to stump us in the peanut gallery!!!

Sun have implemented method for customers who's decommissioned hard drives are to be sold as used drives or reused within the organisation in another department: Disk scrubbing # format>analyze>verify. This method is the only way to clean the drives of all data, installing Solaris over the data does not erase the data. It does take time to complete, I have scrubbed +50 drives at one time ( over a week ) and I spent the time waiting wrestling my kids on the couch, makes it so much easier to tolerate!
