What is the minimum software requirements needed to implement a SAN?

I need to implement a SAN, my problem is that I have no experience in this area and I am uncertain as to what software is required and what is optional (nice to have). To start off I am looking at connecting a V490 and two V240齭 to a MCData 4300 switch that in turn attaches to a 3510 FC array. Future expansion will need to include additional SUN servers and IBM W2K servers.

OS will be Solaris 9 and 10.

What software and or agents do I need to implement a SAN for:

Solaris

McData Switch

3510 array

Thats a rather big area to talk about over a user to user forum. But thats only my opinion, others my be able to narrow down the vast scope of possible feedback for you.

If you are looking to learn this, Sun offer a series of SAN courses, these are:

NWS-4940 Designing Storage Area Networks

PK-ES-490 Installing and Configuring Storage Area Networks

WEB-2030 Fundamentals of Storage Area Networks

Can you tell us what HBAs you are using on the servers?

Is the switch a Sun version of the McData?

What controller is on the 3510 ( JBOD or RAID )?

What kind of data are you using?

As Stuart said, this topic is far beyond the scope of this forum, we could go on for days about configuration. But I would make a few suggestions based on the answers to the above questions.

My apologies I was not clear enough, I have not acquired the V490, the MCData switch or the 3510 yet. I however need to budget for next year. I do have budget constraints so I need to implement an as cost effective solution as possible.

There are no SUN SAN courses offered in South Africa, I did send a mail to confirm and am awaiting reply.

The HBA齭 I am looking at is a 齈CI Single FC 2Gb HBA?br />The McData switch is the SUN version.

The 3510 I am looking at is a 齋torEdge 3510 FC Array w/2 FC RAID controllers 1GB cache, and 2 AC power supplies?br />

Data will be DB2 & Lotus Domino.

It is very difficult to make suggestions about SAN design without being involved in the project. The choice of hardware is good, but one thing you should consider... future expansion, if your storage needs grow over time the switch may not have the capacity. The same could be said for the SE3510. I am very interested to know why you are choosing the DB2, it has very heavy license fees for enterprise installations, for a V490 fully configured you'd be looking at 30000EURO per CPU ( not per socket ), that would be a rough total of 240K. Are you upgrading an existing DB2 environment?
