StarOffice 8: Danish dictionary (getting additional dictionaries)

Hi

I just downloaded StarOffice 8 under this license:

<table border="0" align="center" width="90%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td class="SmallText"><b>Quote:</b></td></tr><tr>& lt;td class="quote">

How to Get StarOffice 8 - Individuals

If you are a student, researcher, staff, or faculty member you can download StarOffice 8 for free from Sun's Software Download Center. Login into the Sun Software Download Center by using your user name and password. If you do not have a user name or password for the Sun Software Download Center please register.

</td></tr></table>

However, I cannot find a Danish dictionary! Here:

<a href="http&#58;&#47;&#47;sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetk ey=1-9-78476" target="_blank">http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-9-7847 6</a>

I read this:

<table border="0" align="center" width="90%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td class="SmallText"><b>Quote:</b></td></tr><tr>& lt;td class="quote">

On the StarOffice[TM] installation CD additional dictionaries for other languages are available in the "addon" directory.

</td></tr></table>

What "addon" directory? In the folder "StarOffice 8 Installation Files" there is no such folder. These files seems to be part of the StarOffice 8 CD, not the single-file download.

Can I download these dictionaries for StarOffice <b>8</b> somewhere? The community developed dictionaries for OpenOffice are not good enough.

Thanks,

Kaare

Okay, this information from SUN was not correct; there is no dictionary available in Danish (or several other languages) as of StarOffice 8:

<a href="http&#58;&#47;&#47;www.sun.com/software/star/staroffice/StarO ffice8_MSOffice2003.pdf" target="_blank"> http://www.sun.com/software/star/staroffice/StarOffice8_MSOf fice2003.pdf</a>

Bye bye StarOffice...

I am not sure that Sun's switch to the Franklin Proximity dictionaries was for the best. For people like me it had the advantage of having a Canadian English dictionary. For others such as yourself, it has not been good.

The page you found with the list of dictionaries is for the CorrectSpell dictionaries that came with SO7. It is probably an artifact from the version change.

The confusing thing is that there is a Danish Proximity dictionary, but it appears to distributed with SO8. The dictionary is distributed with Acrobat Reader 7 language support for spell checking fillable forms.

I would suggest contacting Sun directly and asking for the dictionary.

Monday, March 27, 2006Further testing on the weekend confirmed that that Adobe distributes two additional languages for Proximity dictionaries, Danish and Finnish, which work with SO8.Phil

Hi, as a new full Staroffice 8 (purchased CD pack) user, this thread is very interesting to me. I too have been trying to get a danish dictionary installed for this product, and find its omission irritating.

I'm unable to find out how to download a danish proximity dictionary from Adobe's website and, although my acrobat installation has 3 files :

dan32.clx, dan45.lex and danphon.env

placing these in the share\dict path for So8 does not of itself allow danish to be selected as a dictionary language in So8. I note that the other files in that directory have extensions hsp, fca, ths and hyp. Only the .env extension from the adobe files seems to be common.

Can anyone please help with either a pointer to where from Adobe the dictionary can be downloaded, or alternatively what I have to do with the above (or other) adobe files to correctly "plug them in" to So8?

While the shift from CorrectSpell to Proximity Franklin has been good for some like me (full Canadian English support), it has been bad for others Danish and Greek being two examples.

No the files are now included with the Reader 8 download for specific languages. AR7 had a language update, which might still be on the FTP site.

Those are the files I have.

Did you shut off the quick starter to reinitialize SO and select the files in the Writing Aids section in Options>Language?

Your other option is to use the HunSpell Danish dictionary which was created for OpenOffice.

Many thanks for the advice. I managed to get the Adobe dictionary working. The only things I don't seem to have now are a Danish thesaurus and some sort of grammar checker, whatever that would be called. EG I could type in a document with just random Danish words in it, and no warning will be shown.

Oh well. Progress is progress.

Hi Graham!

Adobe only uses the dictionaries, not the thesaurus. And, while SO8 comes with the ability to use the HunSpell dictionaries, it did not include the ability to use the HunSpell thesaurus. With SO7, I had to use OOo when I wanted to use Canadian thesaurus--the switch to Proximity Franklin gave me that ability with SO8.

Grammar checkers are an addon fro OOo/SO. There is one for English which I have installed but never use. I tried out, and generally rejected, grammar checkers in my CP/M days.

Just a courtesy posting to say many thanks for the help. Think I've got this about as good as I'm going to get it, and at the end of the day it still runs rings around MS Office IMHO. So a few niggles are to be expected. Thanks again.

With the SO8 Product Update 6, SO8 not only use the OpenOffice HunSpell dictionaries, but also the OpenOffice.org New Thesaurus and ALTLinux LinHnj Hyphenator. This means that full language support for languages and thesauri not included with SO8 is now possible.

To install additional languages download the following file:

http://openoffice.mirrors.tds.net/pub/openoffice/contrib/dictionaries/DicOOo.sx w

Open it in SO8 and follow the instructions to add languages.
