Serious Layout problem: Missing Figure. word and starsuite7 produces different output.

Hi,

I have been trying to use StarSuite7 for my correspondence to the

outside world, and have encountered a few incompatibilities before.

I can live with subtle character layout problem which is probably due to

font metric issues.

However, today, I noticed that a word document offered by

ACM as a template for paper submission is

not handled by StarSuite7 (update 5) properly.

StarSuite7 writer doesn't handle the placement of

figure in the document very well.

I am attaching an output (printed to Acrobat Distiller) to produce PDF from

MS Word, and an output from StarSuite7 on the same PC.

The zigzagged figure (Figure 1 in ms word output) is completely missing from StarSuite7 output!!!

I hope to bring this problem to developer's attention.

If there is a better forum to report this discrepancy of layout,

please let me know.

I have noticed similar layout problem with IEEE standard committee

documents before, but due to the nature of the documents, I could

not report such incidents publicly.

This ACM form file is publicly available and

so interested readers can play with it.

The URL for the word file.

<a href="http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html" target="_blank">http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html</a>

Pick the word version and try to see if it prints correctly.

I am enclosing the original doc file and the output PDF from

MS word and StarSuite7.

TIA

My own follow-up.

This is pure guesstimate, maybe there is

an initialized variable that is used in the placement of the figure?

A few days ago, when I tried

to print the file under linux, the figure-1 appeared in the very

upper right corner, but way too up and to the right edge, that

it wast not shown entirely. Its upper region and right region

was missing from the output.

Today, when I tried to re-create the problem under linux,

the PDF export from SS7 didn't show figure-1 at all (so its output

is similar to ss7 under windows2000 which I reported eariler.).

This non-repeatability makes me suspects an unitinialized variable(s).
