Hello there,
The wide variety of templates offered in StarOffice[TM] can be viewed via "File - Templates - Organize" in the main menu. If a particular template is not available, it is possible to create a new template in StarOffice[TM], or search the Internet for a respective template and import it into StarOffice[TM].
For information on creating templates in StarOffice[TM], please refer to the StarOffice Help under the search term "template" or "creating a document template" via "Help - Contents" in the main menu or by pressing the [F1] key.
Regards,
Thanks, Kathy.
Attached is a Writer file that will give you
some idea of the problems I've had trying
to use Writer 7.0 to read legal filings by
others--and to prepare my own.
I created this sample file by importing a pleading filed by
somebody else and changing its text.
I've encountered two problems with StarWriter 7.0,
running on JDS:
1. In the Microsoft DOC file I imported to create this,
the line "Before the PUC..." appears next to the line numbers
and "Reply to Protests" does as well. MS Word must be
handling those line numbers differently.
2. The text looks much better on a Windows machine--it
could be that my fonts aren't installed correctly. Apparently
the font is "Times New Roman"...?
Incidentally, another problem is that this forum's login
is way too complicated--how secure does a user
forum like this have to be? And how quickly should its cookies
timeout?

This email concerns a question I posted to the StarOffice
Support Forum.
Attached are two files. The first, Reply.DOC, is a
Microsoft Word file I received from an attorney, that I am
having trouble importing into the version of Star Writer that
ships with JDS Rel 2.
On my system the text "BEFORE THE PUC..." appears below
the line numbers. In Word, it would appear next to the line numbers.
The second, PleadingWithProblems.sxw, is an attempt to
generate similar legal filings from within StarWriter.
Thank you for any help...

PS. Answers to specific questions Kathy Kwan posted on the newsgroup:
- The OS is JDS Rel 2, purchased from Sun,
- The language is English
- No programs running in background
Calf. has some really tough rules on legal pleadings but the attached file should get you started.
The secret of repeating your numbering and border lines (if a left page border won't work with this file because of the way it includes the header) on every page is to use drawing objects anchored in the header or footer. I have used a drawing text box and two lines.
The case name and number are set in frames with all or parts of their borders turned off.
You can also use a frame with a double line right border anchored to the page for your numbers but it needs to be copied from one page to the next. If this suits you better I have a macro that will copy a selected object to all pages which you can run when the rest of the doc is completed.
Hello Tod Landis,
The Support Service was able to reproduce this behavior with own testing conditions. In order to have this problem corrected in one of the next versions, it was forwarded to the StarOffice[TM] Quality Assurance and Development teams for further testing.
The reason for this problem points to the file filter for MS Office documents. Not all formatting options which MS Office offers are currently supported. Therefore, the document display can appear slightly different.
The inquiry was forwarded to the Development teams for optimization. This feature should be completely integrated in one of the next StarOffice[TM] versions.
Until then we only can recommend to re-edit the imported document manually.
Please note:
The conversion into other file formats may result in loss of content or formatting. These discrepancies cannot be prevented for 100% because this involves the handling of different software from different manufacturers. Differences in functions and behavior can always exist which cannot be completely accounted for.
Regards,
Thank you to both Kathy and JohnV.
JohnV: your template looks like it will work well.
I've attached an edited version of it that has a few
minor changes, eg. sliding the proceeding number to
the left a little. Also, for some reason, the Thorndale font
looks better on my system, than does New Times Roman.
I see you are from Kentucky... By coincidence, I'm working
with a California citizens' group, protesting a ratesetting proposal
by California American Water Company at the same time that
your state Attorney General is investigating Kentucky American Water
Company.Both California-American and Kentucky-American are
subsidiaries of American Water Works. Details at:

Anyway, we'll be using your template. Thank you!

You can't seriously think you are competing with wordperfect or even word when you lack an adequate legal pleading template ... Wordperfect has an excellent template that allows for watermarking, etc. Writer doesn't even have anything.
Also, the redlining method for documents is really not up to par with word, in my opinion.
I hope you can work these things out, or I'm going to move on.
