That would confirm the diagnosis of installation of wrong language update.
SO is a German based program in origin, so may default to that when their is language confusion (this was the problem with the WinWord filter until SO8). But, what would cause the confusion I cannot guess.

I also had my localization settings changed when I installed the patch to StarOffice8. It went from English to Norwegian. When I uninstalled the patch the problem was gone.
There is a BUG in the patch that screws up the language settings. There is no way to change the language settings once you've installed the patch. You have to uninstall the patch to get the language settings restored to English.
This is clearly a problem that needs to be worked.
