Unable to install StarOffice 8
I just purchased a boxed copy of StarOffice 8. I attempted to install it, but there doesn't seem to be a setup.exe file on the CD. There is a setup file, but it opens with Wordpad. I have an Intel Celeron, Intel 915 motherboard, 160gb Western Digital HD. Everything else I've installed since I built this has loaded without a problem. I turned off my virus checker, spyware checker and firewall before I tried to install. Any help would be appreciated.

i think that your operating system has lost the association with ".exe"-executable programs.
this is a problem in your operating system and not a problem in staroffice.
instead of running setup.exe with the explorer, you can try to run the "setup.exe" within the command line interpreter.

Thanks, but I tried both the "Run" command, and a command prompt in a DOS box, neither worked.

I'm going to go WAY out on a limb here, and PLEASE don't chastise me if I'm WAY off base....and not trying to say something stupid or make someone else sound stupid. But are you SURE that you are using the Windows disk, instead of a Linux or Solaris disk? The reason I say this is becuase the setup script for Linux and Solaris will open up on a text editor..since it's a text file...but the windows is an .exe file.
Also, the Windows disk has an autorun routine that should start the setup program unless autorun is turned off or bypassed.
Please forgive me for sounding like I'm trying to make someone else out to be dumb, but it was a shot in the dark. Sorry..

First, I don't think that is stupid, because it crossed my mind. According to the box, it is a 5 disk set. Inside the box, there were 5 disks - 1 labeled for Linux, 1 with Firefox and Thunderbird, 1 labeled for Solaris SPARC #1994, and TWO that appear to be identical - both say Solaris x86 #1993. I tried to call today to find out if I had received a box that was actually missing a disk, but of course they are not open on weekends. I did try the disks labeled x86, on the off chance that they may actually be for an Intel/Windows installation. I've about come to the conclusion that your suggestion is correct - that they didn't put the correct disk in the box. I guess I'll have to wait until Monday to find out. If you know for sure that this is the wrong disk, I'd appreciate it if you post that fact. Thanks again for your assistance.

I don't feel so bad anymore meationing this! You ARE missing
the Windows disk...as the Windows disk says "Windows" distinctly
on the disk!!!! Gosh...if I could, I would drive right over to you right
now and let you borrow my disk!!!!!
Amazing...they packaged it wrong....or the packing machine did...
OK...you will have no trouble once you have the correct disk..
Geez....Well...good luck!
