Win xp SP2 and staroffice 7.0

Hi

After i installed SP2 for Win xp, a problem occurred. I have Staroffice files (*.stw) stored on our intra net. When i tried to access the files, internet explorer simple ask you if you want to open or save the file, if i choose open file, the file is open in a zip-browser ( i have win-zip installed) and thats it, you can see the contents of the file but you cant access it. I choose to save it, the file is saved as a *.zip file.

If i use mozilla and do the same thing it's worked ok.

What齭 wrong?

Hi Oxel

Apologies for the delay in replying to your enquiry.

In order to analyze your problem, we will need additional and detailed data about the problem. The following description could help to solve the issue. Please try out and give us some feedback about the result:

If this behavior was OK with a Windows XP SP1, but no longer after SP2 was installed then the file association got corrupted (at least for StarOffice[TM] files).

Because the content of every StarOffice[TM] document type (SXW, SXC, SXI, SXD, etc.) are containing several files that are combined in one single file with the ZIP format, theoretically it is OK that the MS Internet Explorer tries to open these kind of files with a ZIP compression tool.

To check if the file association got corrupted, please proceed as follows:

1. Login as Administrator user.

2. Start the Windows-Explorer (e.g., "Start - Programs - Accessories - Windows-Explorer").

3. Open the menu "Tools - Folder options".

4. In the following dialog click on the "File types" tab page.

5. Search for the StarOffice[TM] Writer entry (SXW StarOffice Text Document).

6. Click on [Edit].

7. In the following dialog in the "Recommended programs" list click on the StarOffice[TM] application or choose it via [Browse] if it is not shown.

8. Make sure to activate the check box above the [Browse] button in order to set this option permanent.

9. Finally apply both dialogs with [OK].

If this does not help, please do the following steps:

1. The Administrator user is still logged in.

2. In the Windows-Explorer change to a drive and directory with StarOffice[TM] Writer files.

3. Right-click on a StarOffice[TM] Writer file.

4. Choose "Open with" from the context menu.

5. In the following dialog click on the StarOffice[TM] application or choose it via [Browse] if it is not shown in the "Recommended programs" list.

6. Make sure to activate the check box above the [Browse] button in order to set this option permanent.

7. Finally apply with [OK].

Now it should be possible to open file with double-clicking in the MS Internet Explorer and other applications like the Windows-Explorer.

Please note:

We do not know reports about any StarOffice[TM] issues when the ServicePack 2 was installed for Windows XP.

The more detailed the information we have to work with, the more quickly and precisely we can solve your problem. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Hi

Apologies for the delay.

I checked the file association and it was ok!

I even tried to remove the file association and restore it.

The problem seems to be the following:

MS Internet Explorer is reading the contents of the file and tries to open or save it as a .zip file. It seems that MS in sp2 has done some big changes in the way MS Internet Explorer handling files with xml contents. By the way a file save in .xml from office 2003 and open from MS IE is display as a plan textfile showing the xmlcode!!

Hi!

Apologies for the huge delay in replying!

In order to analyze your problem, we will need additional and detailed data about your system and the problem. All information is absolutely necessary for us to reproduce this difficulty and to find an effective solution. This includes:

1. It seems that the file accosiations for StarOffice files are not correct.

Please start the Windows-Explorer and open the menu "Tools - Folder Options". In the following dialog choose the "File types" tab page and then, e.g., the item for "StarOffice Text Documents Template" (*.STW) and click on [Advanced]. In the following dialog choose the "open" action item and click on [Edit]. In the next dialog make sure that the entry for the "Application to used for action" field is like the following:

"c:\program files\staroffice7\program\soffice.exe" -o "%1"

Please note that this can differ because of the local environment.

Check if the other StarOffice items have the same path set.

2. Does it occur with the Internet Explorer only or also when you double click a StarOffice file in the Windows-Explorer (file manager)?

3. What happen when trying to open ZIP files with the Internet Explorer?

Please note:

The more detailed the information we have to work with, the more quickly and precisely we can solve your problem. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Hi!

I am not totally sure of this information that I am about to give, but WinXP SP2 has changed the way it looks at the file association.

It doesn't only use the file extention to find the correct program in which to open it.

Included in the file is also a Mime type header, this is also used by SP2 to identify the file.

So if you open files via Intranet, you need to set the mime types in the IIS Server on your network for the specific file type. In this case .stw!

This you do by opening the IIS, right clicking on the "default web site" and selecting properties.

Then go to the tab "HTTP Headers" and at the bottom you will find the Mime Types.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Johan

hi,

it's a GPO parameter :

User configuration, administrative templates, windows component, IE, security features, mime sniffing safety feature.

Here, the "Internet Explorer processes" parameter have to be disable.

This policy setting determines whether Internet Explorer MIME sniffing will prevent promotion of a file of one type to a more dangerous file type.

If you enable this policy setting, MIME sniffing will never promote a file of one type to a more dangerous file type.

If you disable this policy setting, Internet Explorer processes will allow a MIME sniff promoting a file of one type to a more dangerous file type.

If you do not configure this policy setting, MIME sniffing will never promote a file of one type to a more dangerous file type.

hope it will be useful.
