SO8: Segmentation fault

I installed SO8 on Libranet 2.8.1 Debian; installation to /opt/staroffice8 was sucessful, but running shell script soffice as user (or root; makes no difference) returns:

line 241: 2159 Segmentaton fault "$sd_prog/$sd_binary"

so no user set up occurs. Note: the number ("2159") preceding "Segmentation fault" in the error message is different every time I run the command.

Libranet 2.8.1 uses glibc 2.3.1. The SO8 beta installed and ran correctly on Lib 2.8.1. (The glibc version was incompatible with SO7, although SO7 patch 5 seems to have solved this problem.)

SO8 installs and runs correctly on Libranet 3.0, using glibc 2.3.2.

Updating glib on my Lib 2.8.1 installation is out of the question, as that version of glibc is incompatible with some other apps i use.

Further developments: it appears that my segfault error is related to KDE, specifically 3.1.1 or 3.1.3. I was able to run the soffice shell script in Gnome and Xfce. Once set up, SO8 runs under other windows managers but not under KDE.

This is still mystifying since the beta installed and ran without complaint under KDE. I hope Sun addresses this in a patch, as the utility provided by SO8/Linux in opening WordPerfect files (at long last) is nullified by having to log out and back into a windows manager I normally do not use.
