Replacing Linux

Does anybody know if it is possible to replace linux on a laptop with solaris 10 and still have all the needed codecs for a full multimedia workstation?

Is there good support for mp3, ogg, mpeg, avi, wma, mov and rm?

Also are there any decent tools for audio cd ripping, burning cd's and dvd's and also dvd playback?

Are there any good photo albums? f-spot or something?

3d support for ati radeon graphics cards?

No bothered at all about games.

Thanks

Hi,

Solaris is definitly not a very good multimedia OS. So I would suggest you to stick with linux.

Nevertheless:

CD ripping is no problem with cdrw tools, also DVD playback should work with mplayer. You can download realplayer 10 as a binary here: http://forms.helixcommunity.org/helix/builds/?category=realp lay-stable

Data Dvd burning and cd burning (audio and data) is no problem too.

You should check out, if there is a driver for your soundcard...

Solaris is a great and solid OS... I would keep the linux distro and Multiboot with Solaris for "mission critical"

Hi,Solaris on notebook will work but some features like bluetooth, acpi and sound may case problem or sleeples night without result. Keep in mind that solaris is more server os. You should repartition your disk and install solaris to another slice.m.

Might want to try Nexenta for this instead of vanilla Solaris.

But again, Solaris is far from being a drop in replacement OS for multimedia/home desktop use yet. If adventerous, competent and willing to help along development in such an area I say go for it.

I have been on a distro kick as of late with regards to MS replacements, in particular Linux. After about 8 weeks and 15 different 'distros' (even including Solaris Express, Nexenta, Belenix) I can honestly say now with a straight face, "I LOVE Windows for what it brings to the desktop for me" (no spyware/virus jokes please) and am now comfortably back to just getting some darn work done. But let me tell ya, the linux desktop has come along nicely and a FEW distro's I tried have been pretty darn good home PC OS's.

I would LOVE to see the day I could get the same functionality out of Solaris on my home PC that I can currently with Linux (ick, I feel so dirty). But Solaris is pretty far off outside of really knowing what you are doing and time willingly spent.

my .02
