You start by reviewing the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) and check

whether there is any OS support for your computer's sub-components.

(motherboard chipset, audio, video, ethernet, etc)

You cannot just guess and hope.

They must be on the HCL, or you will not get Solaris to install.

I took a very quick glance, and did not see any Sony VGN-FS model laptops.

... but I only looked for a few seconds.

Solaris cannot be expected to function on every computer ever made.

Actually, I have pretty the same problem with my Sony VAIO VGN-FS550 notebook, *BUT* this happens only with the Solaris 10 01/06 release, and it didn't happen with the Solaris 10 x86 release from previous year and basically, yes, almost all parts of the hardware are conforming to HCL except following:

1) graphic card and X11 (1280x800 and VBIOS funk, solvable in multiple of ways - I've choose to buy XiG drivers at the time)

2) sound card (solvable with OSS)

3) ethernet interface won't work out of the box, but prtconf is your friend....

I've booted the instalation with one extra parameter (-v), and the whole relevant part of the GRUB config is:

kernel /boot/multiboot kernel/unix -B install_media=cdrom -v

module /boot/x86.miniroot

and if it helps to anyone, here goes the full output:

....(allready mentioned output)....

features: 1007fdf < cpuid,sse2,sse,sep,pat,cx8,pae,mca,mmx,cmov,pge,mttr,msr,tsc ,lgpg >

PCI probe mech 1, version 0x210, # busses 8Using default device instance data

mem = 514556K (0x1f67f000)

root nexus = i86pc

pseudo0 at root

pseudo0 is /pseudo

scsi_vhci0 at root

scsi_vhci0 is /scsi_vhci

isa0 at root

And this is the moment where whole instalation stops. anyone has an idea why?

Thanks,

Igor

P.S. I would probably buy HCL story in case that I didn't have completely functional installation of Solaris 10 on my VAIO notebook. It's definitely not the same model, but I could bet that the reason has the same root.

Well I don't know if the previous images are available at this time (you might want to search Sun's site) and I am not sure that I've kept the CD's that I've used for installation, but I think that this probably points to some other problem that might be considered as a bug (or a strange feature...), unless there is something weird with 'backwards compatibility policy' or whatever, which I don't believe it's a case here.

I think you would have the best chances by searching "the web" for the old CD/DVD images...

I presume it was original release of Solaris 10 since I think that 01/06 is the first public patch-release, or it had usual name such as 01/05... I am just speculating now, so I think it would be the best if someone from Sun would answer your question.Regards,Igor
