solaris 9 - can not upgrade with suninstall

I want to upgrade solaris 9 4/03 to solaris 9 9/05

to upgrade I boot with cdrom to use suninstall.

The problem is:

When I try to upgrade our server, I never passed the function "upgrade" , I can only select "initial install"

The server is a SunFire V240

The Partition table is

c1t0d0s0 /

c1t0d0s3 /usr

c1t0d0s4 /var

c1t0d0s6/opt

c1t0d0s7/export/home

When I make first a new default installation wit solaris 9 4/03, then I can select "upgrade" to solaris 9 9/05

With the default installation I have 2 partitions

c1t0d0s0 /

c1t0d0s7 /export/home

Hi Burkhardt,

Did you get a solution to this problem? I have the same problem. I am using Solaris 9/05 HW.

I boot from CD 1. The suninstall program can see the existing disks but doesn't give me an option to do upgrade install. I am doing this upgrade on an E220R. The suninstall program does read the servers disks and even give the option to preserve /u1 filesystem.

I have check Solaris 9 release notes and it is compatible with E220R and all of the hardware on the server, grapics cards etc.

Has anyone else experienced this? I am now looking at doing a live upgrade but would like to know what his going on?

Cheers,

K.

Further information on this. I am upgrading from Solaris 2.6.

uname -a output is shown below.

SunOS DUBEAPP1 5.6 Generic_105181-31 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-60

The server was using Disksuite 4.1 so I removed this by doing metaroot /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 and editing /etc/vfstab and replacing all metadevices with standard block devices (/dev/dsk/c0....). I also disable it starting by moving /etc/rcS.d/S35SUNWmd.init to somewhere else.

This is the standard upgrade procedure for Disksuite machines.

Anyone out there experience the problem of being given no upgrade option and only the initial option?

Best Regards,

Kevin.

Hi All,

I had to put this project on hold for sometime. No downtime etc. from developers.

Turns out it was a stupid mistake on my part. I had booted with Software CD 1 of 2 and not the Installation CD. The installation CD recognised my existing Solaris 2.6 installation and I can now upgrade.

Best Regards,

Kevin.
