Solaris 10 Upgrade no Graphical Environments

I just upgraded my little Ultra 10 (300Mhz, 256MB, 40GB disk) from Solaris 9 to Solaris 10. I basically selected "everything" and after hours of feeding CDs it finished and I just get the console login. I turned on the login server. Reboot. No CDE. I tried runing the session manager from the command line and it chunks away a little while and just comes back to the command line.

During the install it did some windows on the screen. Do I have to go back to Solaris 9 to get this thing doing graphical interfaces again?

Geez Linux is so much easier!

check the install guide for Solaris 10 - somewhere in there says "256Mb or less, no CDE"time for a memory upgrade . . .

The way read the manual was that <256 means no graphical install but not no GUI forever. I think the memory would cost more than the machine is worth. Are there any alternatives? Would Gnome work?

Hello John,

I'm pretty sure that even with 256MB of the memory a graphical setup is available.

If cost is an issue, try to get 128MB modules (501-2654). These are higher profile and <u>not</u> certified for the Ultra 5/10. They even fit in the Ultra 5 after removing the floppy mounting bracket. These modules are inexpensive to get from second hand (e.g. eBay).

The modules are for mid-range and high-end servers (E3x00,E4x00,E5x00,E6x00 x=0 or 5, and E10K).

Maybe a reconfiguration boot (<b>boot -r</b>) resolves the issue.

Have you tried to reset the configuration with <b>sys-unconfig</b>. There are only a few settings you have to re-enter.

I redid the install with exactly the same results. Some somebody in the news groups suggested looking for errors in /var/dt/Xerrors and it just says "waiting for the x server to shut down." I also tried running xinit from the command line and it comes-up with a rudimentary X windows (xterm on gray background no window manager).

This is very weird since the install procedure ran CDE the whole time (I was watching carefully).

Why would the install complete and not properly configure login server and the windowing system? Is there any semi-automated way do complete this?

John

I am having a problem installing the upgrade; I get to the last CD and the reboot now button..nothing happens...it will just hang. If I force reboot, I get all kinds of boot errors then it drops into repair console. This happens even if I do a clean install of the update.
