patching vs upgrading

Hi, I want to know the differences between patching Solaris and Upgrading Solaris

I want to install a software over Solaris 8 release 10/01, but the software needs Solaris 8 2/02.

And I want to know if I could install the recommended solaris 8 patch cluster to solve the problem instead of install Solaris 8 2/02.

You cannot upgrade any Solaris simply by applying patches. New versions have new software/facilities; patches will not add these new featuers.

BTW, this is the wrong forum for this question. This one is about a Sun product called "Live Upgrade," and is not a general Solaris forum.
