Layered Solaris Flash Archives

Hello,

I am trying to understand the details of layered flash archives. The concept is easy enough: you can create a master flash archive and then layer additional differentials ones on top of the master one. But I am unclear in the actual dynamics, particularly on a jumpstart install.

It seems as though you cannot use a full flash archive and a differential one in the same jumpstart install to achieve bare-metal installations, since a flash_install or a flash_update must be specified as the install_type in the profile. Is this the case?

Layered flash archives can be used thusly (in theory) -- I've always had problems implementing them though..

Base OS archive -- myos.flar

Application archive -- myoracle.flar

In your jumpstart/live upgrade flash deployment, you'd first install myos.flar and then myoracle.flar as part of the SAME install.

This lets you maintain flash archive images of standard OS builds as well as Application engines -- which would allow you to rapidly deploy and/or restore images via flars.
