V440 RAM upgrade

Hello,

I have a V440 with 2 processors.

I have purchased an additional 8 Gig of RAM (4x2gb DIMM) and still have 4x512mb DIMMs

Question, how should I install the RAM

Option 1:

Install all 8 Gig on processor 0 and leave the 4x512mb DIMM's installed on processor 1

Option 2:

Install 2x2gb and 2x512mb on processor 0 and install the same on processor 1.

Which will give the best performance?

Thanks

John

As you know the V440 CPU modules hold their own memory, so for consistency I would go for option 2. At least that way any load balancing across CPUs would be better.

I would tend to agree with Stuart, but take a glance through the system documentation. (linked from the SSH)

http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/hardware/docs/Server s/Workgroup_Servers/Sun_Fire_V440/index.html

Page 101 of the V440 Server Administration guide (816-7728) suggests that RAM interleaving takes place at each cpu before it ever takes place between cpu modules.

So your schema #1 would be a better practice.

That document also pointed to the V440 Parts Installation/Removal Guide (816-7729) but I chose to not read that 21.5mb PDF file.

When in doubt, open a service case and have a Sun techsupport engineer review those documents with you.

The final choice may rest upon whatever tasks are done by that box.
