SFV240 boot error message : "unable to access SC device"

Hello !

This morning, I boot my SFV240 server, and during boot test, i had the following message : "unable to access SC device" and the server was stopped. What is this message and SC device ?

I have waited 5 minutes and when I restart the server : all was OK !

Any explanation ?

Many thanks.

Julie

How are you connecting to this server (through serial, graphics head, etc)?

The SC (system controller) is a device that is part of the system board and allows the system to be administered remotely over a standard serial connection or terminal server. This device is accessible through the port marked Serial Management Port on the back of the V240.

To use this (assume you are not already and that you are in fact using a graphics head) you are going to have to power down the server, make sure that there is no keyboards, mice, monitor, etc connected. Then connect through the serial port. This has been mentioned before on the forum and there are posting about how to do this.

Anyway, it is possible that there might be an intermittent problem on this, but you will have to check the outputs from the following commands to clarify if this is the case.

1. /var/adm/messages

2. showlogs -v

It might also be a good idea to open a Sun Support case for this as if it is a SC issue, the fix for it is a new system board.
