Split topic: Are VRM's used in Ultra-80's?

Dumb question candidate:What's a VRM? I'm trying to debug boot problems with an Ultra 80, so am looking for tips from any similar experiences...Rgds - Lou

why are you asking about a vrm for an ultra 80? it doesn't have one... at least not the same type as the E450... and you should have started your own thread... no one will see it that is looking for U80 questions/answers...what are you trying to debug?haroldkarl

Lou,

The systemboard design in E450's require a <b>V</b>oltage <b>R</b>egulating <b>M</b>odule be installed for each of the cpu modules (one for each).

They are also sometimes referred to as a <a href="http&#58;&#47;&#47;sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/E450 /components.html#Power" target="_blank"><u>DC-DC convertor</u></a> module.

They're a lump of hardware that's specific to the systemboard design.

Many newer Sun servers also use such things, but they're no longer a separate replacement part.

For example, should a VRM in a V480/V490/V880/V890 board fail, the entire cpu-memory board gets replaced, and the existing RAM gets migrated to the new board.

The Ultra-80/E420R/Netra-140x systems don't happen to use them, as such. Their voltage regulation is done at a power distribution board level; one item for the needs of the entire chassis.
