Intrepreting the Serial Number
Hello All,
I inherited quite a few Sun servers after a company aquisition and I need to be able to intrepret the Sun serial numbers to figure out the date of manufacture if possible.
I need to know if any of them still fall under the 3 year hardware warranty and for how much longer. I know I can input the serial number when I submit a service request through the Sun support site but it doesn't tell me how much longer is it under warranty.

Each individual platform type will have its own warranty terms.
None are shorter than one year, and some systems do continue to ship with a 3-year warranty.

You can also check on the SSH page for each individual system or large peripheral.
Their warranty is noted there as well.

Hmmm... I tried that link with no success... I entered my Sunsolve ID but no page displayed... Does it require a Sun Engineer or Sun reseller userid?

the link points to the non-public/private version of the Sun System Handbook, which requires a valid SunSolve account.
You can use the figure that haroldkarl attached and the individual System Handbook pages to determine the warranty period.
Determining the date of <b>manufacture</b> doesn't tell when a system was <b>sold</b> and the <b>warranty period</b> started ...

I guess my Sunsolve Account isn't good enough :-( . It just sends me to the handobook home page but won't display the link..

Most of the servers we inherited from the aquisition I knew to be a 3 year hardware warranty V440's, V880's, V890's etc as from prior experience. I just need a rough guess-timate to see if/when we need to act now on getting the production servers on a hardware service contract or if we can wait a bit. We have a site contract for Solaris OS so that's taken care of.

I would suggest contacting SUN Service. If you supply them with the serial numbers and inquire about getting new service contracts they should be able to tell you if they are out of warranty.

Don't get me wrong ...I love Sun Service ..but dang I got close to 75 servers that I will have to check and I don't feel like staying on the phone that long.. ;-)

Just supply them the serial number....They should be able to get back to you via email.Lee
