V240 & external tape drive...
Hi,
Another question: how do I let the OS know about
the newly added (after the initial install of Solaris)
tape drive? It shows me two (why that, btw, there's
only one?) in ALOM
<table border="0" align="center" width="90%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td class="SmallText"><b>Quote:</b></td></tr><tr>& lt;td class="quote">

d) /<a href="mailto:pci@1e" target="_blank">pci@1e</a>,600000/<a href="mailto:scsi@3" target="_blank">scsi@3</a>/tape

</td></tr></table>
but "devfsadm -c tape" doesn't create any device nodes
as far as I can tell...

Try a "boot -r"....If a boot is not possible post the output of "cfgadm -lv". You can also try just a "devfsadm -Cv".The tape drive should show up in /dev/rmt/#

Hi,
And thanks for the quick response!
boot -r
was possible, the box is only in a pre-production
state at them moment.
Didn't solve the issue, though, still no nodes in /dev/rmt/
Here's the output of
<div class="pre"><pre>/# cfgadm -lvAp_Id ReceptacleOccupantCondition InformationWhen Type BusyPhys_Idc0connectedconfiguredunknownunavailable scsi-busn/devices/pci@1e,600000/ide@d:scsic1connectedconfiguredunknownunavailable scsi-busn/devices/pci@1c,600000/scsi@2:scsic2connectedunconfigured unknownunavailable scsi-busn/devices/pci@1c,600000/scsi@2,1:scsic3connectedunconfigured unknownunavailable scsi-busn/devices/pci@1e,600000/scsi@3:scsic4connectedunconfigured unknownunavailable scsi-busn/devices/pci@1e,600000/scsi@3,1:scsiusb0/1 emptyunconfigured okunavailable unknownn/devices/pci@1e,600000/usb@a:1usb0/2 emptyunconfigured okunavailable unknownn/devices/pci@1e,600000/usb@a:2</pre></div>

I can't explain why it sees 2 drives but try this
cfgadm -c configure c2
cfgadm -c configure c3
From the output it looks like there is something hanging out there but they are "unconfigured". Using the above commands should probe the scsi bus and attempt to configure them.
What OS and what type of tape drive? Patch level?

After running those cfgadm -lv still gives me this:

thinks is attached ... :/

Andrej,
What kind of a tape peripheral?
Where are you attaching it to the V240?
This is beginning to sound like a LVD tape device, which would need the 375-3057 (X6758A) HBA, whose driver packages are NOT a part of Solaris.
OBP can see LVD devices but Solaris cannot build device instances until packages are added.
This 'behavior' has been discussed a few times in these forums, e.g.:

Thanks for jumping in Bill!
It's a
Sun StorEdge DAT 72, Product ID SG-XTAPDAT72-R in a 1U-rack
and it's attached to a
Sun StorEdge PCI dual channel Ultra320, PID: SG-XPCI2SCSI-LM320
via the left channel (looking at the box brom the rear).

This is what I saw in VERY QUICK glances through the Sun System Handbook.
>>>all these links require Sunsolve login<<<
The tape peripheral is supposedly LVD/SE
<a href="http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_private/Devices/Rmvbl_Media_Options/RMVB L_OPT_StorEdge_DAT72.html" target="_blank"> http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_private/Devices/Rmvbl_Media _Options/RMVBL_OPT_StorEdge_DAT72.html</a>
... so far, so good. It may even work from the V240's integrated SCSI connector, try it!
===================================
The card requires minimum distros of Solaris, plus software installed via patches.
<a href="http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_private/Devices/SCSI/SCSI_PCIX_Dual_Ultr a320.html" target="_blank"> http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_private/Devices/SCSI/SCSI_P CIX_Dual_Ultra320.html</a>
Quoting:
Operating System Notes
1. The minimum operating system is Solaris 8 7/03, Solaris 9 12/03, or Solaris 9 8/03 x86.
2. Install Solaris 8 mpt driver patch 115275 and raidctl utility patch 115274.
3. Install Solaris 9 mpt driver patch 115665 and raidctl utility patch 115667.
4. The mpt driver is included in Solaris 8 2/04 and Solaris 9 4/04.
5. Solaris 10 is supported on both x86 and SPARC platforms.

My sense is an incomplete software configuration, just as commonly happens with the X6758A adapter.
Move the cable from the card, down to the onboard connecter. Any difference?

I think you got it Bill.Netmanage - You need to install the drives for the SCSI card. They were not supplied with Solaris 8 & 9.Sorry for the run around.

That tape device is an unmodified HP product.
(Well, the bezel now has Sun's name on it.)

Thanks to both of you guys, did the drivers, am
currently downloading the SOlaris patches.

a year from now ;}

Update ...
115667-03 seems to be included in 9 04/05
118558-18 installed successfully
Rebooted the box yet again with boot -r,
ran
cfgadm -c configure c2
cfgadm -c configure c3
again, but there's still no /dev/rmt ...
I haven't tried the internal adapter yet but am about
to, not much else left to try :/
And a question that doesn't really belong here, but maybe
someone can help me anyway:
I'm trying to get the Sun Patch Manager; when I go
to the downloads on sun.com it says to go to sun-solve
to d/l the Solaris 9 version; on sunsolve I get told to
find it on sun/download ... anyone got a working link
for me handy?

... any opportunity to check it against a completely different system?
Since it is a re-branded HP device, perhaps a PC could be used.

Sorry, and no, no change. She just doesn't want to know
anything about the tape drive. Now, does SCSI on Sparcs
behave differently from other architectures? Back in the
day I learnt to turn external devices on before the computer,
does this still hold true here?

Earlier in this thread I provided links to HP's site, for the tape drive.
In addition to that, the link to the 817-5827 manual is a freely available PDF for the SCSI card.It is a LSI22320 adapter, based on the 53C1030 chipset.
I just peeked through the documentation again and the word 'termination' jumped out, this time.I cannot remember if the drive self-terminates, or if you must have a terminating dongle attached.
That's is what we may have missed; a terminator
-
The drive's documentation is only available at HP. See the above links.
That SCSI card is: <a href="http://lsilogic.com/products/scsi_hbas/lsi22320_r.html" target="_blank">http://lsilogic.com/products/scsi_hbas/lsi22320_r.html</a >
... except for the RAID capability in a Sun SPARC system.
This generation card can be thought of as simply a path to the peripheral, same as an IDE interface. No more peculiar configuration, as they auto-configure, now-a-days about the same way as IDE.
You could consider opening a service case, directly back to Sun, and get a Storage Support Engineer to review everything you've done.

I'm getting frustrated :/ ... the links to the manuals for the
tape-drive come back with a 404 and HPs sincere apology.
The back of the box doesn't suggest that it requires any
termination, it has two SCSI channels, both equipped with
a little ID selector (hence not for chaining, ergo no termination)
and no switches for termination, either.
Btw, I *did* try both available channels.

Happy to hear you are functional.
Don't spend too much time worrying about what may have been overlooked.
I hope we were of some small help.
I just attempted a direct click on my earlier links,
both the HP.Com links and the PDF document links.
I happen to be using Firefox.
Each of them were successful and opened their own new browser window with the proper info.
I then tried each with a right-mouse-click and an "open in a new window".
Again, they worked for me.
