Need Solid evidence: For going from 440 to 490

Hi Gurus,

Need solid evidence to give my boss, for purchasing a 490-2CPU, in place of a 440-4CPU (same RAM).

The requirement is:

1. Database migration from private to Sybase ASA 8.

2. Generation of database from 121MB XMLs

3. Testing performance on hifi databases

m-lennon, stumoor your inputs are very much appreciated!

Thanks,

-Vikrant

(fyi: We get the SUN servers at ~60% cost of the values on this site)

First place I would look to begin making a comparison is:

<a href="http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/SunFireV440/spec.html" target="_blank"> http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/SunFireV440/spe c.html</a>

The V490 ( latest system A52-CLH2C208GTB 2 way ) supports UltraSPARC IV+ which has 32MB of L3 cache. This will allow your database to access memory faster than the V440. I like the V440, but I would not use it for a database server. Later today when I'm finished work I'll take a look through the system architecture and give you some better technical comparisons.

Dont quote me on this as it will be in the documentation somewhere for the SPARC IV+ CPUs or the server. But I believe it handles higher page sizes as well.

If you "lose" a single CPU on a 440 you can come up without it. If you lose any of the 4 cores on the single system board in an 490 you will be unable to do anything except watch POST fail. Get 2 System Boards (8 Cores) or invest in onsite spares.

I took a read of the V490 system architecture yesterday, the system installed with the UltraSPARC IV+ is a serious piece of kit compared to the V440. One diagram that I looked at shows the cache structure of the CPU. The CPU has 2MB L2 and 32MB L3 cache where the UltraSPARC IIIi onlt has 1MB L2 cache. You can get more specific details on the system if you contact your local sales office. Interesting point John has made, availability features are very good in the V440. The JBUS has only half the data bus width of the V490 and V440 may underperform as a database server, but if budget was an issue a four way V440 could be a better answer. A V490 with UltraSPARC IV / UltraSPARC IV+ with two boards ( 8 cores ) means 8 Sybase licenses $$$$.

The only Sun documentation I have on these machines is for internal presentation and only accessable through the iForce partner portal. This documentation I would considered internal, so I couldn't share it with you unless you were located in my region EMEA/Sweden and we were working on a solution for you. You should contact your sales office, the staff there will have all the information like this ( probably more if in the US ). Here is a link to the data sheet for the UltraSPARC IIIi:

<a href="http://www.sun.com/processors/UltraSPARC-IIIi/IIIi_PBNupdated.pdf" target="_blank"> http://www.sun.com/processors/UltraSPARC-IIIi/IIIi_PBNupdate d.pdf</a>

And here is a link to the UltrSPARC IV data sheet ( architectural white paper ):

<a href="http://www.sun.com/processors/whitepapers/us4_whitepaper.pdf" target="_blank"> http://www.sun.com/processors/whitepapers/us4_whitepaper.pdf</a>

At this time there is no such public information available for the UltrSPARC IV+ your best bet is pre sales. We will be publishing a system overview for a solution that we are working on, I will send you a link to that when we finish it ( about a week ).
