SUN v240 server

Hi All,

This is my first experience with SUN and we just got a SUNFiRE v240 server for network management. Since i'm the NMS admin i have to get it up and running. Nothing fancy about the box, no keyboard or mouse and no monitor.

I have consoled in through the serial port and can switch between console and ALOM. This server came pre-installed with Solaris 9. How do i get to the OS and start configuring it for the network?

Any pointers, links to the SUN documentation would be much appreciated as i have to start learning all commands from scratch.

If this is your first time with Sun servers then you are doing quite well. There are a few documents that you might find useful and these are:

ALOM:

<a href="http://docs.sun.com/source/817-1960-10/" target="_blank">http://docs.sun.com/source/817-1960-10/</a>

V240 Systems Handbook:

<a href="http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/SunFireV240/SunFireV240.html " target="_blank"> http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/SunFireV240/Sun FireV240.html</a>

V240 Documentation:

<a href="http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/hardware/docs/Servers/Workgroup_S ervers/Sun_Fire_V210/" target="_blank"> http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/hardware/docs/Server s/Workgroup_Servers/Sun_Fire_V210/</a>

Anyway, if this is the first time that the server will have been booted then we will pass it through diagnostics and the easiest way to do this is going to be by connecting through the serial management port. The steps are as follows, with the assumption that the server is powered off with the power cables applied.

1. Connect to the serial management port.

2. At the SC> prompt type the command:

bootmode diag bootscript="setenv diag-level max"

3. At the SC> prompt type the command:

poweron

The server will now start to run diagnostics and should automatically put you to the console, within which you should see the diagnostics output. When this finishes the server will either start to boot, or it will stop at the ok prompt. If the server stops at the ok prompt just type boot.

Now, because the server has come preinstalled with Solaris when you boot the server for the first time it will come up with an interactive menu screens within which you will need to configure Hostname, IP, etc.

Now the above is assuming that you have not tried to boot the server before, if you have and it got part way through the above then you might not see the configuration menu screens, if that is the case then let us know and we can help.
