e3500 issues
Hi everyone, I'm trying to get an e3500 setup. I've managed to stumble my way through several problems, but now I've ran into a brick wall. I'm new to sparc hardware and unix, and thats the main purpose of this server is to learn a bit about sparc hardware and unix. Anyhow, here is my issue. I'm not able to boot from my dvd drive. I get the "Bad magic number in disk label" error. I was hopeing to get some input into what may be causeing this. I get the error when i do an "ok boot cdrom" The solaris 10 dvd ive burned in winxp from 3 different burning programs at 4x. I also verified the md5 checksum of the .iso before I burned the disc. My other suspicion is maybe this is being caused by me missing the scsi terminator for the i/o board? When I found that the person I got the server from took off the terminator I kind of expected it to be a problem, however the dvd drive is detected (Target 6 Unit 0) so that made me think that it should work? Also the drive is a Toshiba 1401 dvd-rom which I noticed did have some firmware updates, I couldnt read the files to determine if possibly the updates were related. Anyhow Thanks in advance if I left out any info that you think might be relavant just tell me what buttons to push and I'll report back.

how far do you get into the installation process? have you done a probe-scsi-all to see your disks? is everything in the right place?
usually the "Bad magic number in disk label" refers to new disks to a Sun box.... I hope you have downloaded the service manual to the E3500... ftp://docs-pdf.sun.com/805-2630-10/805-2630-10.pdf

The error comes when I try to access the Solaris dvd. I get to the ok prompt with no problems at all, but I cant really proceed past that point. None of my hard disks are bootable although they are probed just fine. When i probe-scsi-all I see the toshiba dvd-rom when i probe-fcal-all I can see whichever disks I have installed. The hard drives have been wiped so when I try to boot to them I get the not bootable message. Oh also when i try to boot to the dvd it flashes the access light a couple times before returning the bad magic number.. And like I said I've verified the md5 on the solaris 10 dvd.iso and burned it with nero, alcohol 120% and even had a friend burn it with easy cd on winxp machines. Right now I'm kinda suspecting the missing SCSI terminator could be the problem, but I'm not real confident it couldn't be a firmware issue on the dvd-drive or just a problem with this drive recognizeing dvd's burned from windows. (on single layer disks of course) Oh and after fixing some tod error with the clock board everything on the front and back seems to be in working order with no service lights.
