E420r - Can't open input device & no serial

Hi,

Ive just bought a second hand e420r server with no HDDs, Im trying to connect to the serial output to confirm that it works correctly until my new hard disks arrive from a seperate seller.

Ive made up a 2-3 ,3-2, 7-7 9pin to 25pin cable and connected this to serial A 9600,n81, hardware control on hyperterm and get no output.

This machine does have a raptor gfx card that when connected to a standard vga monitor gives a white screen with "Can't open input device" I have no sun keyboard for this machine.

With both supplies connected the orange led is not on.

The only strange thing with it is that the power button doesnt do anything. plug power in and the machine comes on and cant be turned off with the power button regardless how long I hold it in for.

There is a scsi symbios logic card installed with no terminator.

No hdds are installed.

During boot the cdrom drive flashes a couple of times and with the solaris boot cd also nothing happens.

Please please please I need some advice as Im now a bit stuck. Ive even tried every other serial cable I own to get some out put and removed the gfx card too but still no joy.

did you get the key for it? the keyswitch is 4 position... off, on diag and locked...

never hooked up a Sun with just a monitor... without the keyboard, it channels to the serial port...

so, unplug the monitor and try the null modem... you should get somewhere that way... and maybe find a Sun keyboard...

so sue me.... my E220r went out the door yesterday...

and of course the keys are all different....

U450 / UE450250-1317 No Key 1 250-1317

E250250-1317 No Key 2 250-1317

E220R / E420R / 280R 250-1317 No Interlock 250-1317

maybe you can bum one off someone on the list or rescue@sunhelp.org people....

most likely Sun won't have one... haven't had any for quite some time... I would offer one of mine, but I am running short...

if you are in the US, ebay is an option... you just have to keep looking.... 250-1317 is the Sun number... you might have to buy other stuff in order to get a key... get the service manual from docs.sun.com...

When you say " made up a cable " do you have DB adapters and null modem cable?

I did try the cisco adapters with a variety of cables between them, various modem and any other 9 to 25 cable I had and nothing worked, in then end I sliced up and some cat 5 and mapped through 2,3 and 7 as per another post on here.

The Cisco null modem should work, if you are getting output to the monitor you may be able to resolve this issue by setting the NVRAM to factory default, but you'll need a Sun keyboard at least ( stop + N at boot ). On the power supply issue you may have a faulty on/off switch, are there any signs of cable damage on the power switch? Also can you post the part numbers of the power supplies ( 300-1449-xx )?

There are no signs of cable damage around the power switch. The PSU PN is 300-1449-02 (without the dashes) - although Im intrigued what this would tell someone.Sounds like I should double check the cables.

The link above is not how Ive made the cable as i saw another post on here that said that was wrong. I'll make up another cable to this spec and see what happens.

There are issues pertianing to this revision of power supply, basically the power supply can become dysfunctional due to improper service procedures and display false error conditions. Where did you source the server? If it is a Sun sourced machine and it's currently on support contract call out a FE. If not look for a new power supply(s).

It looks like the original key may have been in the "Locked" position and then removed although that position should have locked the front door as well, preventing access to disks & power supplies. You may be able to tell by viewing which way the empty "Key Slot" is pointing. An 11 o'clock / 5 o'clock orientation would indicate the locked position.
