Question regarding Sun Fire 280R

I am having a problem with a SunFire 280R Server. The server reboots at random times by itself. I have two other 280Rs that do not do this. We went ahead and upgraded the OS to Solaris 10 and still have the same problem. All that this currently on it is the OS.

Does anyone know where I can get firmware updates for this server or know of any commands that I could perform to research my problem?

Thanks

Chris

Chris, there could be any number of reasons for this, are the systems on support contract and have you got access to the system console?

Hello Chris,

review /var/adm/messsages and capture the output of the console (terminal server or system with terminal program constantly attached).

EDIT: The Flash PROM Patch is available on the following page <a href="http&#58;&#47;&#47;sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/SunF ire280R/SunFire280R.html" target="_blank"><b>Sun Fire[tm] 280R Server</b></a>

Michael, if the system is caught in a crash loop you can't access the /var partition, the system just constantly reboots over and over. However, there will be console output if attached and there is a possibilty of sending a break signal to bring the system to obp. From there they can try to recover the system from a DVD image or install server. The patch can't be installed until they get a mountable root partition. I also suggest that they make a service call if the system is on support contract.

Hello Martin,<i>if the system is caught in a crash loop you can't access the /var partition</i>If you interpret <i>reboots at random times by itself</i> as a crash loop, yes.Michael

Woops missed that random part. Sure we'll see what the problem is if Chris posts some console output.

Sorry fo rthe delayed response. the server is not near an internet connection. I can log onto the server and access the Var folder and will post its output shortly.ThaksChris

If it is under contract with SUN call for service.

if no I would attempt to re-torque the CPUs. The torque wrench should be located under the cover with a booklet on how to tighten. Make sure to tighten them evenly!(Quarter turn each screw until complete) If you don't tighten them evenly it will damage the cpu and/or system board.
