V210 controller issue

Hello,

We're installing 5 V210 servers through jumpstart, but there is one server where the disks are on a different controller, at least so it seems. With 4 of the servers, the disks are on c1t0d0 and c1t1d0, but the 5th is showing his disks on c0t0d0 and c0t1d0. This is quite annoying for jumpstarting. When checking /dev/dsk I noticed the following on the 4 good ones :

On the last server, the links to ../../devices/<a href="mailto:pci&#64;1e" target="_blank">pci@1e</a>,600000/<a href="mailto:ide&#64;d" target="_blank">ide@d</a>/<a href="mailto:sd&#64;0" target="_blank">sd@0</a>,0 are missing, so

c0t0d0s0 -> ../../devices/<a href="mailto:pci&#64;1c" target="_blank">pci@1c</a>,600000/<a href="mailto:scsi&#64;2" target="_blank">scsi@2</a>/<a href="mailto:sd&#64;0" target="_blank">sd@0</a>,0:a

and so on

I checked the /etc/path_to_inst and I noticed that

"/<a href="mailto:pci&#64;1e" target="_blank">pci@1e</a>,600000/<a href="mailto:ide&#64;d" target="_blank">ide@d</a>/<a href="mailto:sd&#64;0" target="_blank">sd@0</a>,0" 1 "sd"

is missing on the 5th server.

I have tried to remove the /etc/path_to_inst (and backup file), but the missing line doesn't get added.

Some questions :

What type of device is "/<a href="mailto:pci&#64;1e" target="_blank">pci@1e</a>,600000/<a href="mailto:ide&#64;d" target="_blank">ide@d</a>/<a href="mailto:sd&#64;0" target="_blank">sd@0</a>,0" 1 "sd" anyway ? Why doesn't it get detected ? Hardware failure ?

And most important : how to solve this ?

Thanks and best regards

Philippe

I have seen this happen on V210's, V240 and V440's where there is a DVD-ROM installed. Basically if a DVD-ROM drive is installed it takes controller 0 and the disks take controller 1. However, if no DVD-ROM drive is installed the disks take controller 0.

Can I thus ask if all 5 of the systems have DVD-ROM drives?

Indeed, all 5 systems have a DVD-rom. Mm, it could be that the DVD-rom is defective (or not connected properly) on the 5th system, will have to test this once. Thanks for your reply.Philippe

NP, as you said it could be a defective or incorrectly seated DVD-ROM drive. I would suggest that you swap the drive in the system seeing the problem with that of another system and see if the situation improves. After all the DVD-ROM drives are swappable, just make sure you use ESD procedures, etc.

Additionally, if it is a faulty DVD-ROM drive, or if you see the same issue even after swapping it with the known working unit. I would make good use of your warranty and log a call with Sun for support.

Hello,Indeed, there was a problem with the DVD-rom drive. I removed it once and inserted it again. After rebooting, everything was fine, so Iguess the DVD-rom was not inserted completely. Thanks for the hint !Best regardsPhilippe

No problem. As a side note this issue with controller assignments is not just related to the V210/V240, but can be seen on some other system such as the V440, etc.
