Sun Blade 1000 Solaris 10 DNS Server

Hello.

I've just spent the last few hours trying to get my head around how to set my Blade1000, running Solaris10, up as a DNS server for my predominantly Windows network.

On the network we have a number of PCs (all XP based), four SGIs running IRIX 6.5, the Blade1000 running Solaris10 and an Ultra30 running Solaris9. (There are also games consoles but I don't think that's relevant is it?)

At the centre of this mini-network is a Netgear ProSafe FWAG114 wireless-router which connects to our internet connection via a cable modem. It is configured for DHCP although all the workstations have static IPs outside of the normally allocated range. (Range is within 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.200 and all statics are below 192.168.0.100)

Now, what I've wanted to do for a while is to set the Blade1000 up to resolve domain names for me. At the moment I use an increasingly large HOSTS file which is really impractical for me, especially since one system is running as a test Apache server which uses multiple Virtual Hosts.

Some users on the network use a WiFi system to connect to the network and I wish to allow them to use the network as effectively as any fixed machines. An example would be the use of http://intranet as a standard intranet site. All laptops that come into the building all have their homepages set to this URL but it resolves to a different IP on their home network than the one on this network.

Anyway, I've read a number of resources but they are either designed for an old version of Solaris or just aren't explained properly for me to follow. I'm not yet fluent with any UNIX and I've just had to set up an Apache/MySQL/PHP system on an OSX system which only served to highlight the differences between UNIXes to me!

If anyone can explain, in simple terms how to do this I would be VERY grateful. I need this to start up with the server incase of reboot. If you need any information, please ask and I'll happilly post the requested info.

Thank you so much for even reading this far and I shall look forward to reading your responses.

Anthony

Really, is there nobody who can tell me how to set Solaris10 up as a DNS server or point me to a suitable guide? I'm shocked!

....maybe because you are asking for too much information :)

..or because, apparently, these forums are geared towards the x86 crowd, and you mentioned Blade 1000, so no one wants to speak to you.. seriously..

..but I digress...

..anyway, since you are new to Sun, and have a SPARC system, docs.sun.com is your friend. There you will find just about every piece of text Sun has ever put out. As for setting up DNS, you may want to start here:

http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/816-4556/6maort2po?q=+solar is+10+dns+server+&a=view

..you will also find http://www.sun.com/blueprints/ very useful... they have many PDFs on how to set up a variety of things..

Have fun!

Thank you!

Why are these forums geared up for x86? And why does that make any difference? I assumed that the point of Solaris is that it's the same once running no matter whether SPARC or x86? I know it's different on startup but... Really, please do tell where it says x86 forums!

I know I was asking a lot but I assumed that loads of users had already done this and had used certain references. I will have a look at the pages you suggest, thanks.

..personal experience.. I've seen many "redirects" to the Solaris forums at http://forum.sun.com/index.jspa; people are told to go there instead of here.. matter of fact, try asking anything in the gnome forum and say that you have a SPARC system.., even the people that supposedly work for Sun - they say so in their signature - will tell you it is an x86 forum and won't answer your question, even though it doesn't say so anywhere..

...personal peeve of mine, as you can tell :)
