Sun Blade 1000 Solaris 10 DNS Server
Hello.
I've just spent the last few hours trying to get my head around how to set my Blade1000, running Solaris10, up as a DNS server for my predominantly Windows network.
On the network we have a number of PCs (all XP based), four SGIs running IRIX 6.5, the Blade1000 running Solaris10 and an Ultra30 running Solaris9. (There are also games consoles but I don't think that's relevant is it?)
At the centre of this mini-network is a Netgear ProSafe FWAG114 wireless-router which connects to our internet connection via a cable modem. It is configured for DHCP although all the workstations have static IPs outside of the normally allocated range. (Range is within 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.200 and all statics are below 192.168.0.100)
Now, what I've wanted to do for a while is to set the Blade1000 up to resolve domain names for me. At the moment I use an increasingly large HOSTS file which is really impractical for me, especially since one system is running as a test Apache server which uses multiple Virtual Hosts.
Some users on the network use a WiFi system to connect to the network and I wish to allow them to use the network as effectively as any fixed machines. An example would be the use of http://intranet as a standard intranet site. All laptops that come into the building all have their homepages set to this URL but it resolves to a different IP on their home network than the one on this network.
Anyway, I've read a number of resources but they are either designed for an old version of Solaris or just aren't explained properly for me to follow. I'm not yet fluent with any UNIX and I've just had to set up an Apache/MySQL/PHP system on an OSX system which only served to highlight the differences between UNIXes to me!
If anyone can explain, in simple terms how to do this I would be VERY grateful. I need this to start up with the server incase of reboot. If you need any information, please ask and I'll happilly post the requested info.
Thank you so much for even reading this far and I shall look forward to reading your responses.
Anthony
