Internetconnection the 783th
Hello Ladies,
This is Sol 10 on x86, Mavel Yukon GigaBit.
On Linux it goes like this: pppoeconfig, klick on "next" a few times, it finds an "accessConcentrator" (wtf ever this is), type in your dsl username and password, ask, if u want to be connected by boot up, and there you go!
I dunno any IP, gateway, NIC, wtf else, and never needed this, neither in Linux, nor in Win. I dont use a router, just plain vanilla, no network, just the card to connect to the DSLmodem, and I just want to connect to the Internet. I dont want to read 2000 sides of manpages, just a step by step instruction; if there is one allready, I didnt find it, and I read at least 20 postings with "network or Internet" in the title.
Thanks in advance
Jan
P.S. They helped me to change the resolution 4 the Desktop in another sunforum in 10 minutes. maybe it works here as well!

I have been following Sun discussion forums for a number of years,
and have found them very interesting to read and read and read.
It appears that connections to the Internet have always been difficult when P.P.O.E. is involved.
Not impossible, just problematic.
If I might suggest something --go and purchase a broadband router that can do the PPOE function for you and then it can be a hardware firewall for your computer(s).You connect your system through that router as a DHCP client.
If you do that, then glance at this earlier posting for suggestions on setting up the DHCP client configuration:

Here are some router examples from an online retailer:
<a href="http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCategory.asp ?SubCategory=28" target="_blank">Wired Routers at NewEgg.Com</a>
<a href="http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCategory.asp ?SubCategory=41" target="_blank">Wireless Routers at NewEgg.com</a>
<font color="Firebrick">Contact your own preferred sources, of course.</font>
(I happen to use the tiny Dlink DI604 which I had found for US$10.00 after mail-in rebates, three years ago.
I do not need PPOE with my ISP but that router is able to do that function, as are routers from Linksys, SMC, Netgear, etc.)

Thanks for the answer. It is not what I wanted to hear, but I expected this. So, as a Desktop-Alternative for Windows, like Sun announced it, and like Linux with its userfriendly distris like Ubuntu, Suse etc., is, Sun has to do a lot of work: Solaris is a good system for servers because of its great scaling abilities, but to explore the Desktop, some finetuning has to be done, especially for Internet and Multimedia.
Maybe I can workaround the routerproblem, but anyway, I like to fuddle around with some Unix-stuff, and its great, to have a forum, that has helpfull members and a friendly charism.
