Locking down speed and duplex

I am looking for info on locking down the speed and duplex settings on SUN equipment connected to Cisco Catalysts. The reason I am asking is to provide the right information to several system admins who have stated they need auto sensing for speed and duplex. Everything I have ever delt with from the Cisco point of view is to lock down the speed and duplex between any systems you can. Is that ture with the SUN systems? or do they really work better running Auto sensing?

Thanks

TK

..depends on the interface... in my personal experience, the old interfaces, hme, eri, qfe, or anything prior to that, it was always better to lock the speed at the NIC and switch port. With the newer interfaces, like bge, I just let them auto-neg with the switch and they work like a charm.

As for ways for locking the NICs, it depends on the NIC. Ex: you lock hme's through entries in the /etc/system file, while bge's you lock using a conf file.

You can find the info/syntax on how to configure them in docs.sun.com or sunsolve.sun.com. Just look for the install and/or user's guide for your particular NIC.
