booting from cd
hey there, just followed instructions as follows:
If you just want to see what JDS is all about, you might prefer to try the JDS Live CD instead:
<a href="http://iso.linuxquestions.org/download/http/mirror.linuxques" target="_blank"> http://iso.linuxquestions.org/download/http/mirror.linuxques</a> tions.org/jds_rs_lcd.iso
Again it's a CD image. Once you've burned it, you can boot direct from it, and it won't install or change anything on your hard drive, it will run entirely from the CD. For that reason it will run a bit slower than the real thing, and won't have /all/ the features of full JDS, but it's a safe way to have a play.
Now I have tried to boot image from cd ( i even learned how to change the boot sequence to cdrom-A-C) but this isn't working. it comes up with a failure message and then boots up winXP as normal.
suggestions?

Russell,
I need to ask, and do not mean to offend.
Similar questions have been asked in various forums and I do not know your experience level.
Did you just copy the ISO file to the blank CD disk?
Or, did you use your CD burning software to create the disk?
... something such as Nero, Roxio, Xcdroast, CDburner, etc.
An ISO will contain all the individual files and their proper directory structure that would be necessary to create the disk.
Think of it as a compressed zipfile -- not usable until everything gets extracted.
A program such as those I named are required to 'translate' it to a proper layout onto the blank disk.
I happen to have Roxio's program on my PC and when I double-click an ISO file, the Roxio program launches and guides me through the process.
It just works !
I usually tell the program to burn at a 'slow' speed, perhaps 12x.
I have occasionally seen bad results after burning at full speed.
I downloaded the <a href="http://iso.linuxquestions.org/distro.php?distro=6 9" target="_blank"><u>JDS LiveCD</u></a> ISO just last week.
I saved the file to the hard drive of my WinXP system, then used Roxio to create the disk.
Again, the process just worked !
I just tried a quick Google search on CD burning software.
Here is a link to a 3rd party web site that seems to be all about burning to optical media (CD's and DVD's)
<a href="http://www.burnworld.com/" target="_blank">http://www.burnworld.com/</a>
There are a couple of pop-ups when you first get to the web site,
but there are links to tutorials on the left side of their page.
<a href="http://www.burnworld.com/howto/index.htm" target="_blank">http://www.burnworld.com/howto/index.htm</a>
I'm sure there are many other websites that can provide similar guidance for making an ISO file into a usable disk.
That one was just among the first in a Google search.
