No Unix-Apps can be displayed

Hello everybody!

I have a problem here I really don't really understand anymore: we are

running SGDEE 4.1.903 (built-in webserver) on a freshly installed RedHat

Enterprise Server 3 (Update 4).

I created several applications (Unix and Win) within the Object Manager,

everything seems OK here. When users connect to SGD, the apps are also

showing up within their webtop, the ones running on a Windows 2003-server

run smoothly, but whenever a user wants to start an app running on a

Unix-server (RedHat Enterprise 3 or Solaris 8), the green wheel pops up,

but nothing happens.

It makes no difference if the browser-base Webtop or native Client ist

beeing used, although I can have a look at the launch details within the

native Client. Here, the whole process is running fine, but stops whenever

the login prompt is being shown. It seems to me as if no login is

performed at all. Also, there is no difference if the connection to the

application server is handled via Telnet or SSH. The effect stays the same.

Yesterday, I even reinstalled RedHat and SGDEE 4.1.903, created only one

Unix-app, but even that didn't get me any further.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Christian

This sounds like an ssh connection problem. I'm guessing telnetd is

switched off so that won't work. You probably need to do the things

outlined in

http://www.tarantella.com/support/documentation/sgd/ee/4.1/help/en-us/base/inde pth/ssh.html

Apologies if you've already done this.

Hi Barrie!

What exactly do you mean by "telnetd is switched off"? telnetd on the

application server is up and running, the user there can connect without

problem.

If you're thinking about telnetd on the Tarantella-server wou're right,

but I wouldn't have thought that this would be needed.

The strange thing is that also ssh doesn't work although I already did

those things mentioned in the link you posted.

Thanks nevertheless for your help. Any other ideas?

I'd suggest posting the "Launch Details" content (using the browser).

Also, is it just applications run on unix servers other than the TTA

server failing, or do apps on the TTA server fail too ?

Hi Blade!

OK, here we go:

-

Starting the application...

Connecting to Protocol Engine...

Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3 (Taroon Update 2)

Kernel 2.4.21-15.ELsmp on an i686

login:

Connected

Apps on the TTA server are running just fine, only apps from other Unix

hosts are affected.

Hi

I can't really explain this with the information we have so far but it

looks like you don't have the ability to login to the third tier to run

the application. This could be just that you aren't being allowed to do

that or it could be a problem with the launch script. There is a debug

setting in the launch script that will detail the interaction with the

third tier. In the var/serverresources/expect/unix.exp file you need to

uncomment the startdebug call to enable this. Then we should see more

information about the launch in the log files on the server.

P.S. I meant telnetd on the TTA server is disabled by default. But you

say that apps run fine on the TTA server. Also, you may want to check

you have a full duplex network connection between the server and the app

server and any firewall you may have between the two. Also, login from

the RedHat console with ssh and check that you can run X apps via ssh

remotely.

Regards

Barrie
