yes, though not officially supported as a Directory Server, we have had
customers use NDS for LDAP authentication.

Well, I tested it with version 4.0 (eDir 8.7.3) and it worked, provided
that you had to make some modification on the eDir site as to allow
clear text authentication.
By default eDirectory uses an SSL connection for authentication to
the directory. You should disable this:
In Novell tools Launch ConsoleOne -> Select LDAP Group object -> General
-> Allow Clear Text Passwords
You can do the same with iManager but I can't, at the minute, provide
you with the exact steps to allow Clear Text Password since I don't have
an iManager box running right now :-(
