War Files & Par Files

First...

I'm new to portals, so please forgive my ignorance.

I understand that portlets are basically web applications conforming to a particular specification (JSR 168). A point of confusion for me has been that I have seen articles and Sun Product documentation talk about WAR files and PAR files.

I've created portlets in WAR files...

How are PAR files different?

Are they obsolete (i.e. prior to JSR 168, and only deal with the deployment of Provider/Channels that don't conform to JSR 168)?

Any help to clarify this for me would be appreciated.

Regards,

Byron

Hello,

In the context of Sun Portal, PAR files indeed refer to archives for portal component specific to Sun Portal not conforming to JSR 168. I would not say they are obsolete, as they are used (and useful) for deploying Provider/Channels/Containers (non JSR 168) conforming to Sun Portal APIs. Consider PAR as a techology different from JSR 168, but still useful.

'Hope this helps.
