Re: (Feature request) Field / method filtering in the Explorer.

Hi everyone,

I'm embroiled in writing a developers' guide for some APIs we've developed

and as a result of this I'm thinking of submitting a feature request for

NetBeans. Writing this documentation I would have found it incredibly

useful to be able to filter the methods and fields that are visible in the

explorer, so for example I might want to hide all private and package access

fields and methods and show only those that are public and protected -- so

essentially I'm only showing the API. But I might also want to filter out

other types: statics, volatiles etc. I'd really like to see something like

this, because apart from anything else it would really tidy up the explorer

view during development. And how about ordering fields and methods

according to visibility a la JBuilder?

Anybody else got any thoughts on this? Is it worth pursuing? Is it already

in there and I've just missed it (I'm using FFJ 4.0 CE at work, and NB 3.3.2

at home).

Thanks,

Bart

It's worth Requesting

It's not there ;(

I personally don't like this deep tree of

Class

- Methods

- Fields

- Beans

And surely the filter is a good thing

Post here the issue number, and I'll vote for it

This at least you can vote for right away:

I would prefer to have grouping so that you can group by visibility

etc., rather than filtering. Filtering can hide important information

that can lead to confusion.

Sure, but the filtering is only an option that you can switch on / off /

configure. I'm gonna get a formal feature request fired off in the next

couple of days and I'll put the URL here so ppl can vote for it. I've

already voted for the one Jesse sent to the list earlier, since there's at

least some crossover with what I'm aiming for. The precise problem at the

moment is that the explorer view IS confusing when you have a multiplicity

of classes and packages, and the little icons aren't really clear enough at

a glance. The filtering and / or grouping should decrease the confusion,

and with filtering enabled the explorer view will be significantly cut down

(hurrah) meaning that you can see the information you want and don't have to

bother with what you're not interested in at the moment.

Best regards,

Bart
