Palm Tungsten E and SunONE

We are using Campus Pipeline here at Washburn that uses the iPlanet (SunOne) calendar. I have been using my old Handspring Visor and synching to the iPlanet calendar without any problems.

We have a new faculty member that purchased a Palm Tungsten E device. She use to be able to sync to her Desktop as well as to her palm. We are unable to get it to work. With the palm software that came with her Tungsten E device she can sync to the PalmDT, but not to the iPlanet server.

We are sure that other faculty, staff and students will start buying these Tungsten devices and right now we cannot get them to sync correctly. Advice?

What have you been using? I'm fairly new to this myself but you may want to check out http://wwws.sun.com/software/download/products/3f9ee26e.html Let us know if this helps.

I also have the same problem here. I have a Tungsten T3 that I am

trying to get to sync. I have tried it with both version of the sync software. Sync 1.1 p1 and p2 with no success. I am in the process of

escalating the problem to Sun. It appears to be some sort of incompatability with the Palm Desktop 4.1.2 and PalmOS 5.2.1 and the sun sync stuff, as to what I do not know. If I find an answer I will post it here!

I have just had this confirmed as a problem with the Palm changing the tungsten date book format.Sun Engineering are aware if this problem and a engineering ticket has been raised. Contact your local sun rep and get them to find out when the fix will be available.

Scott,

Thank you for the information! I will go through our Campus Pipeline rep to see if we can find out a date this will be fixed. Glad to hear that I we were not overlooking something on this issue. The faculty member has been left with doing triple entry (desktop, palm and paper). So far we have not heard of any other reports of problems, but with the holidays approaching I am sure that others will come to campus with one of these new Tungsten models.

If you hear anything else from your Sun rep, please let me know.

John,

I will certainly let you know if I receive a fix. This is going to turn into a bigger problem over time as it affects all Tungsten

type devices running PalmOS 5.2.1 as far as I can tell. (We are not buying anything but Tungsten series devices now)

If you hear anything drop a message here as well if you can.

Thanks,

Scott.

Scott,

We ended up closing this ticket after our admin talked to technical support. They said a patch is supposed to be out in April for this problem. We have closed the ticket until we receive more information about this working. For now, our user is not able to sync to their calendar.

Have you received any further news from Sun One. My users also are having problems with this.

Thien11,

No, we have not heard anything more about this update/patch. I just spoke to another faculty member on Tuesday that is wanting to buy a new palm and I told him to stay away from Palm Tungsten's because of this problem.

When and if I hear something, I will post a reply to this thread.

Lfwright57,Nothing yet.... hopefully soon! I will see if our system admin can get anything out of tech support since they said it would be out in April.

I logged a case with sun to get an answer on this and was told that

the support would be available in the 1.2 release of the sync

software. I have been told that it will be available for download

from Sun's download section of their web site from the 25th

of May onwards.

Hi All,

I used to use a Handspring Visor and had been very successful with daily SunOne Calendar sync operations. I have just upgraded to a Zire72 using the PalmOS 4.1.4, and even with the most current SUN patch I still receive an error message (as shown below).Any suggestions? Thanks.

I am wondering the same thing... I cannot find v1.2, only 1.1 P2The various bugs seems to also affect Palm Desktop v4.1.4; only found out when a user upgraded their desktop software (ended-up downgrading them to get synch working again)

Hi Michael,

The next release of the sync synchronization tool appears to be complete vapourware. There has been talk about a new release of the tool for some time (over a year) as this thread shows, and after pestering our local SUN account representative two weeks ago, it became abundently clear that nobody is working on the updated version within SUN and that it isn't a priority at all.

With regards to Palm Tungsten E/T3 and users who are using Palm Desktop >=4.1.2, the only workaround we could come up with in the short term was to downgrade as you have already discovered. You can upgrade back to a higher version of the palm desktop software, but you will need to disable two additional conduits (calendar & tasks) that are installed as part of the update (note I said UPDATE.. not full installation from the CD as that wipes the old conduits which include the SUN conduit).

With regards to Tungsten T5's, even the workaround of downgrading doesn't help...

I should also mention that there is a company that provides a third party middleware for synchronisation between various devices (palm/pocket pc/syncml comp.) and the SUN calendar/email/LDAP server software. We are currently attempting to find out how well/if this product does what it promises.

http://www.weblicon.net

If anybody has used this product and could provide feedback that would be great :)

Cheers,

Shane.

My understanding has been (as of late) that the latest Sun Mail server and calendar stack would enable seamless integration with Outlook. In that instance, you would then be able to sync your Palm device using the supplied conduits for Outlook.

Too bad I don't use Outlook...

Anyway, I spoke to Sun technical support, and it seems that if enough customers contact them about this, they will try to convince the engineering group to get back to work and "finish" v1.2 (or at least address the Palm Desktop 4.1.4 issue, synching to a Treo, etc.)

So, if anyone reading this has a Sun support contract, may I suggest contacting Sun and have them pass your request(s) to the engineers.

We have a lot of faculty here that are using the Tungsten and do not use Outlook. So I hope this is not their fix. I am hoping for a solution to this comes out from Sun that corrects this problem where a sync can be done between palm device and the SUN calendar server. ugh!

I am not sure if this is related or not, but we have another faculty that purchased a PalmOne Handheld Organizer Model Zire 31. It synced a few times and then stopped doing the sync. She checked with Sun to see if there was a newer version of the sync software and they told her that 1.1 with the patch is the newest version. It still does not work.

Has anyone else used the PalmOne Handheld Organizer Model Zire 31? Any problems? Is this related to the problem that initially started this thread?
