Java working with Mozilla 1.5 (for Linux)

Hello,

I have installed Java but am having much difficulty getting it to work with my browser. I followed the steps exactly per Sun's instructions and when I click on a site that requires Java, I get a message stating that I need a plug in and to click to download. When that happens, it downloads but nothing installs.

I presume that I am not the only one who is aware of this problem. If someone has an idea of how to help me, I would greatly appreciate some help. Thanks in advance.

Scott,

Can you provide a link to the site which gives this error? Some websites incorrectly detect browser plugins. For example, http://www.fluwatch.com indicates "You don't have Marcromedia FlashPlayer!" for Java desktop, even though skipping the broken plugin detection code with http://www.fluwatch.com/index2.html works fine.

The problem of poor website design won't go away until a critical mass moves off the IE/Win98 platform that too many webdesigners use as their sole testbed. If you find a website that doesn't work with Java Desktop for this reason (there are many), let the web developer know that the internet wasn't designed to be platform specific, it was designed for internetworking!
