Netscape Messaging Server AND NT platform

Hi all,

Here is our situation :

- We are running the Netscape messaging/directory 4.1x server under the NT platform

- 2500 clients are accessing this platform (30% IMAP, the rest POP3) with a Outlook 2000 client (in Internet Mode). These clients are equipped with XP Professional as their OS.

This platform (i.e. Netscape servers under NT / Outlook client) have been running for 4 years now.

We have been running into many problems and now that the NMS 4.x products are in the end-of support in the near future (jan. 2003), we are rethinking the whole messaging environment for the following reasons :

- SUN or Microsoft have allways been pinpointing at each other, when problems arise (because of Outlook), and we consider having virtually no support (and are tired of this situation)

- We don't know what plans have SUN in the future for the NT/2000 platform development for messaging / ldap

- We would like to offer users a more integrated collaborative environment than what they have today : group calendering, web access, conferencing, ...

We have many choices :

- Consider a migration to 5.2 in the near future, and stay with the Outlook 2000 client

- Consider a change on the client side, that integrates better (Communicator ?) - Thats a BIG client impact

- Consider a complete migration to an Exchange environment (we keep the Outlook client, we have no more support issues, we offers basic collaboration - but more than just email, ...)

Is any other company in a similar situation (nb of users, NT platform, access via something else than Communicator, lack of suppport, .unresolved problems, ...) ?

I would like to see your comments about this.

Thank you all in advance

The next release of Messaging server will support Windows 2000, Redhat linux 7.2 and hopefully Sun linux 5.0.

Calendar 5.1.1 is being released with a Syncronisation tool that will syncronise a users calendar between the server and Outlook and a hand held device. The sync tool runs on NT 4.0.

We support Outlook so long as it is standards compliant i.e IMAP etc. And even then we bend over back backwards to implement workarounds and custom options to work with Microsoft apps (even when they are broken).

Sun ONE is multi platform software, although we will be dropping older platforms such as NT 4.0 in future.
