Is it possible to customize thick-thin-thin layout myself?

May I know whether it is possible to customise the layout myself instead of using the default layouts provided by ips (e.g thin-thick, thick-thin etc.)Thank you.
In iPS the layout columns width are fixed.In case if you need to cutomize the width then you have to modify the width in the com.iplanet.portalserver.desktop.FrontProvider(nothing but customizing the DesktopServlet)

I have tried to search in Administration Guide and Programmmer Reference of iPlanet Portal Server 3.0, but I cannot find anything about DesktopServlet.
Where can I find "guide" for customizing the DesktopServlet?
Where can I find DesktopServlet anyway?
Actualy I want to customize the total width of thin-thin-thin lay-out to a fixed pixel witdh (instead of 100% as it is now).
