iPlanet Portal Server includes a profile-management system called the profile server. The profile server stores the profiles associated with iPlanet Portal Server objects such as domains, roles, and users. It can be further categorized into two parts the profiles service ( the profile servlet which reads the profiles from the ldap server) and the profile store ( the ldap server which stores the profile information).
With SP4 each instance of iPS will have its own profile service all talking to the same ldap server.
