MTA not responding?

In iMS 5.1 running on NT4. Why does the MTA show that it is not responding in the Console? I cannot start it using the Console...Thanks

Is the service up and responding?

If it is up and it's showing up differently in console it could be a bug in the way console determines it's status on NT.

When you try and start it form the console what error do you get? What about trying to start it from the services control panel, does that work? Command line?
