How do I host the forth domain, but not the third? ie www.dept.school.edu

We are using ims-5.1 on sun unix system, we have 150 domains, but some of them we host only the webmaster account, while the department host their own email. www.department.school.edu as an example. I tryed using the three settings in Delegated Admin for the department domain:

Mail can be Routed through these hosts

Smart host to resolve user's alias

Mail server that hosts this domain

I changed each to the department's server, yet all mail test give an Protocol: SMTP,

Server Response: '550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias

This is odd. I thought this was an easy fix and just use the smart host setting. If this is not what the smart host setting does, what does it do, and how should I get the department.school.edu mail over to the department.school.edu server?

A better way to do it would be to create a rewrite rule for the domains you dont host that rewrites the address to point at the smart host.

For example say the server mail.www.dept.school.edu hosts mail for www.dept.school.edu. You'd want a rewrite rule similar to this:

www.dept.school.edu$U%$H$D@mail.www.dept.school.edu

That should do what you want it to.
