How do I subscribe someone else to a shared folder?

Is there a way (not requiring a client password) that I as a postmaster can subscribe someone else to a shared folder. "local.store.sharedfolders" is off and thus the client cannot see the shared folders to subscribe to. iPlanet Knowledge Base article id 3884 describes one method for doing this but requires the client to telnet into the server. That is something I do not wish to try to explain to unsophisticated clients.
