escript in native scripts?

We are starting to deploy an application to many concurrent

environments, all 'lights-out' operations that use scripts

instead of onsite operators. Tne number of environments

precludes being able to manage them by econsole.

Escript seems to lack the conditional or error flag

syntax to pass run time errors back to parent scripts,

and in some cases doesn't even count things as exception

errors that a production script would want to know about-

such as an application not being installed.

Forte Tech Support told us that at least one other customer

has expressed interest in this capability. But I don't think

there is any definite committment to this from Forte. Their

suggested workaround involves some pretty intricate customer-written

parsing of the stdout redirected from individual escript commands.

Has anyone come up with any ideas they'd be willing to share

on using escript in shell or perl scripts that use standard

conditional testing and error handling?

The inability to easily detect and program around exceptions in escript as

well as

fscript are serious limitations.

"expect" is a public domain utility you might consider. There is an O'Reilly

book out called "Exploring Expect", by Don Libes
