Webless Installation

Hi,

How do I perform a webless installation( iWS on different machine than iAS)?

I have already installed the iWS on Server A, now I'm installating iAS on

Server B.

Which option do I use: express, typical or custom install?

And what should I response for the prompt:

"

iPlanet Application Server supports iPlanet Web Server 4.1.

Enter the FULL PATH of the Web Server Instance to be used, or enter 'cgi' if

you are using cgi.

For example: /usr/ns-home/https-my_web_server

"

I've tried entering the full path of iWS instance on server A:

/usr/iplanet/webserver/https-idev-web01.icomms.com.my

But it says "PATH not found".

Thanks,

Azrai

Hi,

For a webless installation, you must not install the webconnector in the

iAS. I personally recomend you to use the custom installation for the best. On

solaris, when you select the option to install the iPlanet Application Server(I

think, Option 4), you should see a "web connector" option, which you must not

select.

Also, you must install the same (./setup of iAS) in the system where you

have installed iWS and install only the "web connector" option.

The common problem is that, you may not be able to view the iAS from iWS

system or vice versa. The solution is to check if both the systems are mapped in

the /etc/host file, a ping to the ip address or the fully qualified domain name

will help.

Please let me know if this helps.

Hi,

You can use either typical or custom installation. But you need to deselect

webserver installation. Default is takes all. I would reccomond you to install

typical installation, if you are not very sure what to install and what not to

install. Custom installation is better if you know the components and their

work.

I see a couple other people have already answered this, but let me add a couple of things:

First, detailed instructions for doing webless installs can be found in Appendix A of the install guide. But the previous posts are correct: just deselect components other than iPlanet Servers and then the webconnector on the detail screen. If you do this you will never be prompted for the webserver installation screen.

Second, the TestDrive installer does not support webless installs. I mention this because several people have posted this question before and it turns out that they were using the TestDrive version.
